What is a Death Doula?

An End of Life (or Death) Doula is a non-medical professional trained to provide holistic care at the threshold of life and death. My work supports both the dying and the living, weaving together practical, emotional, and spiritual care.

For those at the end of life, I assist with advanced care planning, legacy projects, bedside and vigil presence, and post-mortem support. For the grieving, I offer compassionate spaces to process loss through one-on-one coaching and facilitated grief groups.

Whether walking beside the dying or tending to the living who remain, my role is to ensure no one has to travel this path alone.

Mission

My purpose is to empower individuals and communities to rediscover their connection with death and grief, transforming them into gateways for liberation from fear. By changing the narrative around death, I aim to bring death care and grief care back to families and communities, fostering a compassionate, holistic approach that honors both the dying and the living.

This Ancient Practice Embodies Heart-Centered work.

End-of-life and grief care are community-rooted practices, born from the recognition that death and loss are natural, significant parts of life. As a Death Doula, my role is to honor the wishes of the dying and to support the needs of the grieving. I provide compassionate presence, creating safe spaces where individuals and their loved ones can navigate the complexities of death and the tender journey of grief with dignity, courage, and care.

Who Am I?

Headshot of Kema Ward

I am Kema Ward, a compassionate Death Doula and Grief Guide with a mission to bring comfort, support, and empowerment to individuals and families navigating both the end of life and the grief that follows.

My journey into this work was catalyzed by the loss of my beloved little sister. That profoundly personal experience instilled in me a deep understanding of the sacredness of death and the importance of tending to the living who remain. It awakened in me an unwavering passion to transform fear and uncertainty into spaces of healing, connection, and courage.

As your trusted companion and advocate, I provide holistic support tailored to your needs, from advanced care planning and bedside presence to grief groups and one-on-one coaching. Each service is offered with compassion and intention, so you feel fully held at every step of the journey.

I believe in the power of creating sacred spaces rooted in dignity, respect, and love. Together, we walk this path, discovering meaning, solace, and connection amidst life’s hardest thresholds. You do not have to face death or grief alone; I am here to walk with you.
